Online Guest lecture: the living labs of the master River Delta Development - Replay

During the master River Delta Development students will learn in ‘living labs’: testing grounds where professional practice, researchers and students collaborate on complex tasks. The living labs are hosted and supervised by lectors and researchers and part of ongoing research projects. In the guest lecture dr. Teun Terpstra will provide an overview of the 2021/22 living labs at HZ University of Applied Sciences. In addition to the overview he will shed light on the research that was conducted by students in the Flood Risk Information Experiment.

Are you curious the learn more about the River Delta Development master? Please, sign up for this guest lecture on the 23th of March, 17:00 CET.

Dr. Teun Terpstra will tell you more about these living labs:

Coastal Landscape Transitions (CLT) Living Lab
In the CLT living lab, the main focus is on coastal landscape transitions in relation to human use and interventions of the coastal zone, while also getting an understanding of concurrent physical and ecological changes. By employing three case-study areas (Hedwige, Perkpolder, Rammegors) with different technical and societal contexts, we aim to better understand how the local communities perceive the transition of the (local) coastal landscape. Surveys, interviews and focus groups with a range of stakeholders are essential methods.

Living Lab Blue Economy
A sustainable future lies in multi-use of seas. In the North Sea many ideas and plans are made for a large scale nature inclusive production of seaweed and shellfish. However it hasn’t resulted in concrete actions up to now. In this Living Lab, master students are dealing with critical success factors (technical, ecological and governance) for this transition towards a sustainable Blue Economy.

Living Lab Robust Water System Zeeuws-Vlaanderen
The Living Lab Robust Water System Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (RWS-ZV) focuses on solutions to fresh water availability in the south-western region of the Netherlands. Due to many different parties involved in a very complex setting (water for agriculture, industry, nature and transport, combined with spatial planning) it is difficult to move forward. Water is not the main business for many stakeholders, nevertheless a very important commodity. A solid governance structure is what our master students are looking for in this living lab supporting a Robust Water System in 2050.

Living Lab Flood Risk Information Experiment
Evacuation is an important crisis management measure to reduce loss of life in case of imminent flooding. Due to limited road capacity relative to the warning time, it is expected that a large part of the population will not be able to leave the province in time. Vertical evacuation, i.e., sheltering in the attic or high building, is an alternative. To increase risk awareness and inform coastal residents about vertical evacuation, master students developed a documentary in co-creation with crisis management professionals. The effectiveness of the documentary was tested in a quasi-experimental research design and results were shared in a joint learning event with inhabitants and professionals.
